Beethoven: Symphony No. 3, “Eroica”
Beethoven’s third symphony, Sinfonia Eroica (Heroic Symphony), is one of his most celebrated works. Although it was ultimately dedicated to Prince Lobkowitz of Bohemia, Beethoven always intended the work to be dedicated to Napoleon Bonaparte. The second movement, the marcia funebre, has been played at numerous funerals and memorial services, such as those for Felix Mendelssohn, Franklin D. Roosevelt, John F. Kennedy, and the eleven Israeli athletes killed in the Munich massacre at the 1972 Summer Olympics. In addition to this monumental work, the orchestra will play Ellington’s The Three Black Kings and Schwantner’s New Morning for the World.
