Scott Cuellar, piano
Liszt: Les Préludes
Liszt: Piano Concerto No. 1
Copland: Third Symphony
Complete with prancing melodies, a lyrical nocturne, and a thundering conclusion, Liszt’s first piano concerto is considered to be one of his best pieces. It is a fine example of the kind of binding together and rounding off a whole piece at its close that is so characteristically Liszt. While initially dubbed the Triangle Concerto by a fierce critic for his feature of the somewhat offensive instrument, Liszt’s first piano concerto continues to captivate audiences and is firmly in the repertoire. Score one for the triangle. Soloist Scott Cuellar performs the concerto, accompanied on the program by Liszt’s Les Préludes and Copland’s Third Symphony.
