Kabalevsky: Overture to Colas Breugnon
Tchaikovsky: Violin Concerto
Shostakovich: Symphony No. 12, “The Year 1917”
As one of the most well-known violin concertos, Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto was the best thing to come out of a very bad marriage. Following the blowup of a three-month long marriage to Antonina Milyukova, Tchaikovsky was flooded with inspiration and completed his violin concerto in eleven days. While initially heavily criticized for being an inflated and pretentious work and for its demanding, virtuosic solo part, Tchaikovsky’s care to cushion even the most challenging passages in music of unforced lyricism and restraint has allowed it to become one of Tchaikovsky’s most beloved works. Soloist Augustin Hadelich has been firmly established as one of the great violinists of his generation. His remarkable consistency and musicianship has earned him a Grammy for “Best Classical Instrumental Solo” and appearances with every major orchestra and chamber orchestra in the United States, several on numerous occasions. Tchaikovsky is joined by Kabalevsky and Shostakovich on this exciting program!
