Emily Averyt is in the 10th grade at Saint Mary’s Hall (SMH). She began studying Suzuki violin at age 5 with Dr. Stephanie Westney, member of the San Antonio Symphony and professor at the University of Texas at San Antonio. Emily reinforced her early training by attending the Atlanta Suzuki Institute, Colorado Suzuki Institute, and Youth Orchestra of San Antonio (YOSA) Summer Symphony Camp. She has participated in the TMEA All-State Orchestra, All-Region Orchestras, SMH Strings, YOSA Sinfonietta (concertmaster); and is currently a member of the SMH Chamber Orchestra, YOSA Philharmonic, YOSA Chamber Orchestra, and Opus Four (string quartet). She toured with the YOSA Philharmonic in the summer of 2016 to Prague, Vienna, and Budapest.
Emily has performed in masterclasses with Dmitri Pogorelov, Bella Hristova, and Sarah Chang. In addition, she has received coaching from Eric Gratz, concertmaster of the San Antonio Symphony, Brian Lewis, professor at the University of Texas at Austin, and Stephanie Sant’Ambrogio, former concertmaster of the San Antonio Symphony. Emily is a member of the National Junior Honor Society, National Latin Honor Society, National English Honor Society, and SMH Varsity Cross Country team. She looks forward to going to Tanzania this summer for a service learning trip, working side by side with the Maasai community in the Arusha region to build and restore schools. She dedicates tonight’s performance to the loving memory of My and Kim Nguyen, whom she fondly refers to as ông (grandpa) and bà (grandma).
