Schubert Ave Maria
Schubert Symphony No. 8, “Unfinished”
Mahler Symphony No. 4
Schubert and Mahler are masters of the symphony and the song. Mahler’s Fourth Symphony includes a song he wrote that conveys a child’s vision of heaven. The song appears in various fragments in the first three movements and is sung in its entirety in the last movement. The text ends, “The angelic voices gladden our senses, so that all awaken for joy.” Schubert’s Ave Maria is one of his most beloved melodies out of the over 600 songs he composed before his death at age 31. The “Unfinished” Symphony has been called the first romantic symphony with its emphasis on expressive melody. It remains a mystery why Schubert left it incomplete with only two movements.
