Thomas Huckaby


Thomas David Huckaby, has been Principal Bass of the San Antonio Symphony since 1997.

Tom began studying the double bass at the age of 9 He has received numerous awards and scholarships  from The Curtis Institute, Indiana University at Bloomington, Interlochen Arts Academy, Aspen Music Festival.

Tom participates in the Symphony’s community outreach program performing for students throughout  Bexar County in an effort to promote the double bass as means of personal fulfillment for students. As an instructor of the double bass Tom has an extensive private studio teaching beginning students through college and professionals. His students have gone on to some of the most respected music schools in the country as well as successful professional positions.

Tom and his wife Dr. Alejandra Moreno M.D., Pediatrician and Epidemiologist, share a love of San Antonio, including all things River Walk, our rich and varied musical heritage, including the Symphony’s 70 seasons of orchestral music, the world-class medical centers we have here, including the Barshop Longevity Center, and the distinguished University of Texas Health Science Center.

An avid pedagogue and academic, Tom has an intense interest in human longevity, regenerative medicine, and theoretical biogerontology. He is currently a student at UTSA in working toward multiple degrees in biology.
